SWAP CARD SERIES
ALBUM OF UNIFORMS OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMED FORCES
Over the centuries, as mankind found it necessary to band together as a fighting force against a common enemy, it became a personal matter of life or death to be able to know friend from enemy. As a result, in each army every man was dressed in the same kind of clothes and these became known as uniforms. At a glance everyone could recognise those who belonged to their own force.
In early days armed forces' uniforms were very colourful, and the reds, greens, blues and yellows used made military parades very bright and attractive. Army, Navy and Air Force uniforms of today, however, are mainly khaki, grey or blue, as these more practical colours are less costly and are better for camouflage. Over the past 100 years a great variety of uniforms have been worn by the Australian Armed Forces, and each kind has its own interesting story to tell. Golden Fleece has selected 36 of these colourful Australian uniforms for this latest Swap Card series.
Each uniform illustrated is correct in every detail, as all have been checked by the Military Historical Society of Australia (N.S.W.. Branch), the only organisation which the Commonwealth Government and the Military Forces agree is qualified to do this.
Mr. Monty Wedd was invited to supply basic sketches and detailed information for the Swap Cards, as Australian Armed Services' uniforms have been his particular hobby for many years. We gratefully acknowledge this assistance and also that of the N.S.W. Lancer Museum and the Dee Why Historical Museum.
We have tried to match the colours of every uniform as closely as possible, but a few shades may have altered a little during printing.

INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SITE This website has been setup by John O'Brien, Perth, Western Australia
I found this album with swop cards inside in a second hand shop, and so it can be enjoyed by both this and future generations, I decided to scan the images and reproduce the text from this 1964 publication.
The cards were given away at GOLDEN FLEECE Service Stations to the children of the motorists as an incentive to buy petrol there. Both these cards and this petrol company have disappeared from the Australian scene today, January 2001Please email me with any comments
