The magnesium powder available thru’ the Polio Office is Chelated Magnesium with 20% elemental magnesium. This is the same strength as the chelated magnesium tablets you can buy in the shops but without the fillers needed to hold a tablet in shape. (ie it is concentrated and a much small amount is sufficient). It is effective within a couple of minutes of taking and is also a third of the price of tablets. We now have plenty of stock available .
A flat 1ml scoop is the equivalent of taking 4 chelated magnesium tablets by 500mg (100mg of elemental magnesium per tablet) or a quarter teaspoon measure = 5 tablets.
NOTE
1. Take away from food. All
minerals are better absorbed in the gut in an acid environment.
So you get better absorption on an empty stomach and even better
if taken with a teaspoonful of straight lemon juice or apple cider
vinegar.
2. Do NOT take with foods containing grains. Minerals are bound to the phytates (fibre) of grains so taking with foods made with grains (ie cereals, breads, cakes, biscuits, pasta, porridge, psyllium husks or other bulking or constipation medications etc) will be like “catching” the minerals in the “net” of fibre (like caught fish) and they will just pass out the other end - not absorbed - a waste of money.
3. Magnesium needs to be taken at least twice a day. The muscle relaxing effect only lasts about 12 hours then more magnesium is needed again. Exercising heavily (or doing more than normal activities eg going shopping, sport, physio, swimming) even stressful situations, can deplete magnesium levels more quickly - so take extra at that time, if deficiency symptoms present.
4. Our concentrated magnesium powder
does not dissolve in water - place it on your tongue with the scoop and
wash it down.
Drop measured dose onto tongue and wash down
with a drink of water. It tastes OK - maybe a little gritty like
sand. If not tolerated this way, pop onto a spoonful of yoghurt,
ice-creams, banana or non-grain food of similar consistency that will hold
it in suspension.
| TO WORK OUT BEST MAGNESIUM DOSE
Start with 1 tablet or a quarter of a flat
1ml scoop twice a day on an empty stomach.
Diarrhoea or gut disturbance is the sign of overdose (ie taking too much). If diarrhea occurs, wait until bowels back to normal (may be several days) then resume with a slightly lesser dose - (having a good cleanout every so often is OK anyway. It helps to prevent bowel cancer as it stops build-up of toxins in the gut.) The aim is to have easy bowel movements on a daily basis and alleviate tight muscles, cramps, backaches, headaches, muscle aches etc. |
| Common Symptoms of Low Magnesium - Cramps, muscle aches, backache, headaches, migraine, anxiety, restlessness, can’t sit still. |
| TO WORK OUT BEST CARNITINE DOSE
Start with half of a flat 1ml scoop in half
an inch of water or a 250mg capsule first thing in the morning, before
eating or doing anything strenuous - like housework.
Diarrhoea or gut disturbance is the sign of overdose (ie taking too much). If diarrhoea (a need to go urgently and a bit loose) occurs and is caused by carnitine excess, it will usually be gone by lunch time (but magnesium will have you going off and on all day and even into the next.) Once this point is reached, then resume with a slightly lesser dose - that doesn’t give you diarrhoea. If still tired after lunch you may need to take a bit more carnitine (250mg-500mg) in the early afternoon. Try and see what works for you. |
| Common Symptoms of Low Carnitine - Tired, fatigued, run out of energy easily, “hit the wall” feeling, muscle pain, chest pain, brain fog. |
